Taiwan authorities are investigating（观察）what caused a train carrying 366 passengers to derail （脱轨）Sunday in Yilan County（宜兰县）, northeastern Taiwan, killing at least 18 people and injuring 178.


The train was traveling between the cities of Shulin（树林） and Taitung （台东）when it left the tracks （轨道）on a coastal line popular with tourists just before 5 p.m. local time. All eight train carriages （车厢）derailed in the incident, with five of those overturning（翻倒了）.


Among the dead（殒命的人）are eight people from the same family who were traveling back from a wedding in New Taipei city, according to CNN affiliate （分支机构）in Taiwan SET TV. The cause（缘故原由）of the derailment is still under investigation.
